Hip Wah was founded in 1984 by parents. Hip Wah has evolved over the years, but it remains true to its mission:

• To provide Bay Area children the opportunity to experience and appreciate the rich heritage of the Chinese and Chinese-American people, and

• To maintain an accessible summer program by keeping it affordable and leveraging community support through parent participation and a volunteer parent board.

For four weeks each summer, children of diverse ethnicities come together and are immersed in a full Chinese experience that culminates in a music festival where everyone participates with choral and instrumental music, dance, and martial arts. While Hip Wah's focus is on Chinese and Chinese-American culture, campers do not have to be Chinese to attend. They just have to have an interest in learning about Chinese culture. For many, Hip Wah is an opportunity to discover their cultural identity.

Hip Wah serves entering 1st through 7th graders. Their day at camp is filled with fun activities where they experience Chinese culture, traditions, music, language, arts and crafts. They are supported by dedicated teachers and camp aides who help build a sense of community.

Community, friendship, culture, fun. These ingredients make Hip Wah one of the most successful and longest-running Chinese-American summer programs in the country.
